Student Clinician Program

Student Clinician Program

The Student Clinician Program conducted by the Indian Dental Association and sponsored by Dentsply India, provides the opportunity to a student from every college selected by the IDA to compete at the national level. The final winner receives an expense-paid trip to participate in the American Dental association’s Annual Scientific Session.

Definition of Program

A table clinic is a tabletop demonstration. It is not an essay, lecture, or exhibit. It must be shown or demonstrated completely in no more than 5 to 7 minutes, and repeated many times during the clinic period at the SCP Meet in Chennai on 11th February 2010. Visual aid may be developed and used to supplement the clinic. Amplified sound devices, heavy office equipment, patients and live models may not be used.

Eligibility

The participating student clinician must be selected through a table clinic competition at his/her college; must be an under graduate student at the time of the presentation of the clinic, preferably final year student, at the American Dental Association (ADA) annual session; and preferably must be a current member of the IDA. Two or more students may develop clinics but only one student from each school is eligible to present the table clinic for judging.

Invitation to Participate

The initial letter of invitation to participate in the Student Clinician Program is forwarded to the dean of each school. The dean will indicate whether or not the school will participate and name the faculty advisor to whom future correspondence should be directed.

Judging Category

The table clinics will be judged as per the following category listed below:

Category: Clinical Application and Technique

This is a table clinic demonstrating a method of oro-facial therapy. This may show preventive, restorative, surgical or diagnostic procedures, or it may concern itself with materials or devices directly related to dental care. It may include materials that advocate one clinical technique or another without research. A table clinic including research and/or advocating a clinical technique as a result of that research belongs to this category.

Rules and Regulations:
  • One student must present each table clinic during judging. For the open presentation other students who assisted in producing the Table clinic may present or assist.
  • Students must submit the application form with a summary of their clinic, not to exceed 250 words in length. The summary should be neatly type written or computer generated sheet. Avoid hand written abstracts.
  • Students must remain at the table at all times during the judging session.
  • All displays, including charts, models, projects and screen, etc. must be confined to the table top. Signs hanging down from the table toward the floor will not be permotted. The table measures 2ft * 6ft and is 42inches high.
  • Displays must not exceed more than 3feet above the table top.
  • Table covers other than provided by IDA, will not be permitted.
  • The oral presentation for each demonstrated should be no longer than 5-7 minutes in length.
  • The name of the student’s college or the name of any other college must not be visible on the exhibit or any materials during the judging session.
  • Amplified sound devices, heavy office equipment, patients or live models cannot be used. Sound reproducing devices with individual earphones may be used. Videocassette recorders and monitors and computer terminals may be used at the student clinician’s expense and only if these do not visually or audibly interface with the other clinics and that this equipment fits on the tabletop. The materials shown (videotape or computer program) must have been developed by the student clinician.
  • If material has to be handed out, it is strongly recommended that it be only a one-page synopsis of the table clinic. The copy of the material should be forwarded to the judges (shall inform you later), and should also be available at the clinic during judging, should not have the name of the student’s or any other school anywhere on the material.
  • No advertising material may be distributed nor any material shown, which in any way resembles a commercial promotional effort. Drugs and products mentioned in the presentation generally should be identified by the chemical formulae or by generic name. Trade names may be used for identification and clarifications purposes only. Should the use of trade names be advantageous to the viewer’s understanding of the presentation, the rationale should be submitted in writing much before, in advance of the clinic requesting IDA’s approval. Commercial promotion of a product or service by trade name is absolutely prohibited.
  • Clinicians must report to the table clinic area in the exhibit hall half an hour before the judging session begins in order to set-up their clinics in time. Business attire is required for all clinicians.
  • No one, other than the student clinicians and judges, is permitted in the clinic area during the judging session.
Any violation of the above regulations will automatically disqualify the student from above competition and the clinic will not be judged.
Method of Selection

The Association does not designate a specific procedure for the selection of student clinicians. However, the council does require each school to utilize the mechanism of a student clinic competition conducted either by the student association or the school itself. However, it must be understood that the students who participate in the Association’s program must adhere to the regulations established by the Council on ADA Sessions and International Relations.

Expenses of Student Clinicians

One student selected by each college will receive from Dentsply an appropriate allowance for hotel and meal expenses and for ground transportation. The final winner will be sponsored by Dentsply to attend the ADA annual meet in USA.

Equipment

Dentsply/IDA will supply the following

  • Counter table, covered and draped, 2ft*6ft; 42 inches high
  • Stool
  • Sign with table number and name of clinician.
Special equipment such as table lamp, slide projector and table top screen can be furnished on advance request of at least 20days before start of the event. The students must supply a clinic title sign if such is desired, and this sign must be part of the display located on the table top.
Judging of Clinics

Table clinics are judged as per the category: Clinical Application & Techniques. A qualified panel of judges would evaluate the clinics.

Handout Material

All material to be distributed by the student must be sent to the IDA to be forwarded to the judges. The material sent for forwarding to the judges or available at the clinic during judging should not have the name of the student’s or any other school anywhere on it. While handout materials are not required, additional point can be gained in the judging from the availability of well-prepared concise literature. If material is to be handed out, it is strongly recommended that it be only a one-page synopsis of the table clinic. It will be the student’s responsibility to arrange to have available sufficient copies of handout materials for distribution to those viewing the clinic.
